The Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour Revisited" on PBS

Apple Films Ltd.
Songs you’ll never forget, the film you’ve never seen and a story that’s never been told.

In August 1967, in the wake of the extraordinary impact of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles made a film.

It was seen in the U.K. by a huge audience, at 8.35 p.m. on BBC 1 on Britain’s Boxing Day…and all hell broke loose.

Magical Mystery Tour Revisited, the story behind the controversial and surreal film Magical Mystery Tour features new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr (pictured left). All is revealed on THIRTEEN’S Great Performances, Dec. 14 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings).

Magical Mystery Tour was chock-full of thinly veiled references to psychedelia, anarchy and fantasy, all in the setting of a traditional British sightseeing bus outing to the seaside. This was a far cry from the innocent loveable mop-top japery of Help! and A Hard Day’s Night.

Middle Britain had tuned in but was a long way from turning on and dropping out – the nation was baffled and outraged by the film’s unexpected and uncompromising surreal, non-linear narrative. Paul McCartney appeared on The Frost Programme on rival ITV the day after transmission. He was called upon to account for himself and the rest of the group.

Could it be that a pearl was cast before swine and then thrown away? To its small band of admirers, it was a masterpiece of surreal British wit and imagination in the tradition of The Goons and Alice in Wonderland.

Now with the film fully restored to the highest technical standard with a remixed soundtrack, it’s time to tell the extraordinary story of Magical Mystery Tour: why it was made, how it was made and the circumstances in which it was made.

In the summer of 1967, The Beatles had the world at their feet. It’s impossible to overestimate the effect of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band; that was revolutionary too but everyone loved it. In August, Brian Epstein tragically died, leaving the Beatles not only without a manager, but without their ambassador. They decided to go ahead with the film they’d been planning.

To tell the story, this film calls on those who were there, most notably Paul McCartney, who had the original idea, and Ringo Starr, who is credited as the director of photography. John Lennon and George Harrison (pictured below) are represented through interviews over the years and through their appearances in the film itself and in the copious and fascinating outtakes.

Apple Films Ltd.
Line producer Gavrik Losey and cameraman Michael Seresin evoke the heady atmosphere of the shoot, along with Jeni Crowley and Sylvia Nightingale who, as teenagers, reported from the coach for The Beatles’ Fan Club magazine.

Paul Fox, then controller of BBC 1, recalls making the deal with The Beatles for the film. Also sharing their reminiscences are Peter Fonda, Paul Gambaccini, Terry Gilliam, Neil Innes, Paul Merton, Barry Miles, Annie Nightingale and Martin Scorsese.

Finally, this is a chance for the film’s admirers to have their say; its detractors have been given plenty of opportunities to have theirs. It provides a chance to evoke 1967 as it was – post-war Britain as much as the summer of love, when a new set of artists with The Beatles at the helm came up with an alchemy that turned the ordinary and the commonplace into the magical and mysterious.

Review: Rod Stewart Christmas TV special

Rod Stewart’s “Merry Christmas, Baby” just debuted on PBS-TV stations across America (check local listings for times in your area).

The latest in THIRTEEN's Great Performances series, it opens with Stewart riding a bicycle up to a hillside mansion. He quickly changes into a suit and starts this elegant hour-long holiday special that revolves around solid new Verve Music Group CD, “Merry Christmas, Baby.”

With conductor (and album producer) David Foster on piano, Stewart performs alongside a small band and string section throughout the program. They do most songs in a main room with an audience but also venture outside where “snow” covers the ground and trees. Stewart does a traditional, intimate take on “White Christmas” in a private room with just Foster and veteran guitarist Dean Parks.

There’s a good vocal chemistry between Stewart and duet partners Mary J. Blige (a dramatic “We Three Kings”), Michael Buble (the breezy, humorous “Winter Wonderland”) and Cee Lo Green (the soulful, Motown-ish title track, complete with female backing vocal trio).

Trumpeter Chris Botti appears on the virtual "duet" with Ella Fitzgerald (a sleek, jazzy “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?”). A bagpipe ensemble even brings some of Stewart’s native Scottish heritage to “Auld Lang Syne.”

More lively soul strains come via the horn-driven original finale, “Red-Suited Superman” with guest Trombone Shorty. Longtime Stewart fans and those who came along more recently with the “Great American Songbook Series” should enjoy both the TV special and album alike.

In Southern California, airdates on KOCE include: 8:30 p.m. Nov. 29, 1 a.m. and 8 p.m. Dec. 1, 4:30 p.m. Dec. 2. Other airdates on Ovation are: 3 p.m. Dec. 9, 2 p.m. Dec. 10.

"A Very Special Christmas" music on TV

Next week, GMC TV presents the music program “A Very Special Christmas: 25 Years of Bringing Joy to the World,” a documentary that celebrates a quarter-century of Christmas albums in support of Special Olympics.

Hosted by Vanessa Williams, the show features new performances by Martina McBride, Jordin Sparks, Train and more; memorable musical highlights from the past 25 years and interviews with many of the artists and others who have made the series the most successful music fundraising series of all time.

“A Very Special Christmas: 25 Years of Bringing Joy to the World” premieres on GMC TV, Dec. 8 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

The in-depth look at the people and moments that have made the series a success includes interviews with Jimmy and Vicki Iovine, who produced and conceived the first album in 1987, as well as members of the Shriver family – Maria, Tim, Bobby and the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver - who founded Special Olympics in 1968.

Other artists featured in the special include, BB King, Bob Seger, Colbie Caillat, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Darius Rucker, Darlene Love, Eric Clapton, Hootie & the Blowfish, John Mellencamp, Jon Bon Jovi, Madonna, No Doubt, Randy Travis, Ronnie Spector, Run-DMC, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder, Sting, The Pointer Sisters, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Tracy Chapman, Train, U2, Whitney Houston and Wyclef Jean.

Noted Tim Shriver, Special Olympics Chairman of the Board and CEO: “Over the past 25 years, seven ‘A Very Special Christmas’ albums have generated over $109 million in royalties and investment proceeds for Special Olympics and its athletes, making it one of our largest single sources of funding.”

“A Very Special Christmas: 25 Years of Bringing Joy to the World” also features an exclusive performance by platinum recording artist Jordin Sparks performing the Christmas classic, “Do You Hear What I Hear?” backed by a choir.

“I grew up listening to the ‘A Very Special Christmas’ albums, which always include some of my all-time favorite artists singing the Christmas songs I love,” said Sparks. “I’m truly thrilled to be a part of this anniversary celebration and to support Special Olympics.”

“I am deeply honored to serve as host for this delightful musical special chronicling 25 years of ‘A Very Special Christmas,’” said Williams. “I am very passionate about Special Olympics and have had the pleasure of recording songs for two of the albums, including one recorded live at the White House, which remains a highlight of my career.”

Created by Jimmy and Vicki Iovine and Bobby Shriver, along with Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, the “A Very Special Christmas” series has brought together top musical artists, who donated their time and talent, as well as publishers and record labels, which gave their consent and waived royalties.

Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Sting, Run-DMC, Madonna, Jon Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow, Wyclef Jean, Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty, Mary J. Blige, Eric Clapton and Tracy Chapman are just a few of the artists who have recorded songs for the series, including, music videos and three television specials filmed in Los Angeles and at the White House in Washington, DC.

Recalling the time in 1987 when U2 was first approached to participate in the original “A Very Special Christmas” album, Bono said: “When Jimmy Iovine came to us with this idea and I discovered the kind of people who were at the heart of the project, I knew it was something we couldn’t turn down.”

This year, for first time in the series’ history, two albums were released simultaneously. “A Very Special Christmas: 25 Years Bringing Joy to the World” features songs performed by Christina Aguilera, Francesca Battistelli, Michael BublĂ©, Cheap Trick, Vince Gill, Jewel, Amy Grant, Dave Matthews Band, Jason Mraz, One Republic, Rascal Flatts, Train, Martina McBride, Jordin Sparks Lauriana Mae, Jono, Grayson Sanders and the Wonder Girls.

A second album, “A Very Special Christmas: Bringing Peace on Earth,” features songs by Christian artists Meredith Andrews, Chris August, Francesca Battistelli, BarlowGirl, Big Daddy Weave, Building 429, Jason Castro, Group 1 Crew, for KING & COUNTRY, Dara Maclean, Jamie Grace, Mark Schultz, Natalie Grant, NEEDTOBREATH, Point of Grace, and Sidewalk Prophets. Both albums were released Oct. 16.

The return of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

Push the Sky Away, the 15th studio album by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, will be released on Feb. 19.

"If I were to use that threadbare metaphor of albums being like children, then 'Push The Sky Away' is the ghost-baby in the incubator and Warren's loops are its tiny, trembling heart-beat,"  says Cave

At the heart of Push the Sky Away is a naturalism and warmth that makes it the most subtly beautiful of all the Bad Seeds albums. The contemporary settings of myths, and the cultural references that have time-stamped Nick's songs of the 21st Century mist lightly through details drawn from the life he observed around his seaside home, through the tall windows on the album's mysterious and ambiguous cover.

The songs on this album took form in a modest notebook with shellac covers over the course of almost a year. The notebook is a treasured analogue artefact but the internet is equally important to Nick: Googling curiosities, being entranced by exotic Wikipedia entries "whether they're true or not."

These songs convey how on the internet profoundly significant events, momentary fads and mystically-tinged absurdities sit side-by-side and question how we might recognise and assign weight to what's genuinely important.

Push the Sky Away was produced by Nick Launay and recorded at La Fabrique, a recording studio based in a 19th Century mansion in the South of France, where the walls of the main studio are lined with an immense collection of classical vinyl.

"I enter the studio with a handful of ideas, unformed and pupal; it's the Bad Seeds that transform them into things of wonder. Ask anyone who has seen them at work. They are unlike any other band on earth for pure, instinctive inventiveness," notes Cave.

On this album, it's not always apparent what instruments the band is playing: they may be traditional musical instruments but other sounds are clearly generated by objects unrelated to musical instruments. What's being created is a collective musical language that's rich and complex.

Push the Sky Away has a clarity and sweet strangeness that's built upon the refusal to accept limitations, whether they be the traditional uses and sounds of musical instruments, lyric styles, or diminished spiritual horizons.

"I don't know, this record just seems new, you know, but new in an old school kind of way,"
says Cave.

"We No Who U R" is available on 12/3. The track comes as a download with every pre-order album purchase via nickcave.com or iTunes. "We No Who U R" will also be available as a single download from all digital retailers.

Guster live album+tour for early '13

It’s been eight years since Guster released a proper live album - 2004’s Guster On Ice – and two years since their last studio album, Easy Wonderful

The new one, Live Acoustic, is due out Jan.8. It's a musical tribute to the varied faces and places that made last year’s travels one of the most remarkable in Guster’s impressive career.

We could have called it Live at Various Theaters,” says drummer Brian Rosenworcel, referencing the fact that the songs on the album were culled from many performances and not just one. “Actually, I wish we’d called it Live at Various Theaters. Is it too late to call it Live at Various Theaters?”

While the members of the band mainly stick to the acoustic guitars on Live Acoustic, the songs are fleshed out with Charlene Huang on violin and April Guthrie on cello – helping to bring out the parts and arrangements that have made Guster’s studio recordings such mainstays.

Rosenworcel plays a drum kit adorned with glockenspiel and percussive drums like djembe and hand snare, while newest member Luke Reynolds alternates with bandmates Ryan Miller and Adam Gardner on acoustic guitar, bass, piano and ukulele.

The melodies and harmonies that have made Guster famous have never been more purely on display. Live Acoustic is an album that pulls from an impressive fifteen-year discography and makes a case for Guster’s place amongst the best pop bands and songwriters of their era.

As an added treat for fans, the band will release a hand-numbered, limited edition version at www.districtlines.com/guster.

Eco-friendly letterpress packaging by Union Press (Somerville, MA) is made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials.

Ultravox's Midge Ure does rare US tour

Midge Ure will embark on U.S. solo tour in January - his first in a decade.

The last tour across the US was all acoustic in 2001; this will be the first tour with a full band since 1985.

Right The Stars will be opening the shows and will also provide backing for Ure.

Boasting an impressive back catalogue, Ure led the groundbreaking electro-rock band Ultravox, plus Visage, Thin Lizzy and Band Aid, where he produced/co-wrote the smash charity single "Do They Know Its Christmas?"

The Mavericks set full-length reunion album release date

Grammy-winning vocal group, The Mavericks, will release of In Time, their first album in seven years via Valory Music Co. on Jan. 29. The project will coincide with the band’s 20th anniversary of their first major label album. In anticipation of the new release date, the Mavericks have re-launched an all-new website at mavericksband.com.

The Mavericks' distinct sound, which has taken Country to places the genre has never been, is again evident throughout the new 14-track album which includes a bonus version of “Come Unto Me” in Spanish ("Ven Hacia Mi"). In Time was produced by lead singer Raul Malo and Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Warren Zevon).

Whether it’s the Buck Owens-influenced “Dance In The Moonlight,” the panoramic Orbison-esque
“Born To Be Blue,” the horn-punctuated retro noir “Back In Your Arms Again” or the Tejano-esque “All Over Again,” the Mavericks have once again found the way to make genre-defying soul music.

For Malo, the lead singer with the rich supple voice that’s second to only Roy Orbison in its ability to convey lonesomeness, desire and vivre; drummer Paul Deakin and multi-instrumentalist Robert Reynolds; as well as longtime collaborator keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden and seasoned guitarist Eddie Perez, life has become richer in terms of experience, playing acumen and a sense of their own musicality. It has also deepened the connection between them in a way that heightens the singular chemistry that made the award-winning band one of the most exciting live acts in any musical genre.

The band’s high-energy concert style was most recently witnessed at the 2012 Americana Music Awards where they received a standing ovation after performing “Come Unto Me,” – a passion-fueled, seductive tune. The awards show was broadcast on a special Austin City Limits Presents: Americana Music Festival 2012.

And last spring, as reviewed in the OC Register, they were deemed a highlight of the Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, Calif. (see review elsewhere on blog).

1.Back in Your Arms Again (Raul Malo, Gary Nicholson, Seth Walker)

2. Lies (Raul Malo, Al Anderson, Bob DiPiero)

The return of Biffy Clyro

I had a great interview with the band a few years ago (see elsewhere on this blog). Looking forward to the new material...

UK rock band Biffy Clyro have announced the U.S. release of their new album, Opposites, on March 12 via Warner Bros. A deluxe double album with "making-of" documentary will be available the same day. The first single off Opposites, "Black Chandelier," just premiered today on Radio 1's Zane Lowe show.

Produced by GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers) in LA, Opposites is the follow-up to the critically-acclaimed Only Revolutions, which sold over 800,000 copies worldwide and earned a Mercury Prize nomination.

The Scottish trio has also cemented their status as one of Britain's most exciting live bands, with three recent sold-out UK arena tours, including a landmark show at Wembley Arena, and headlining festival slots. They won "Best Live Band" awards from both NME and Q in 2011.

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble's 'Texas Flood' reissued in January

An expanded two-disc 30th anniversary edition of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's Texas Flood will be released on Jan. 29 through Legacy Recordings.

Executive produced by John Hammond, the original album was produced by the Austin blues guitar legend, his band and Richard Mullen. The Legacy Edition is handled by Gregg Geller (who, as head of Epic A&R in 1983, signed them to the label).

An immediate and surprising success, Texas Flood peaked at #38 on the Billboard 200 while "Pride and Joy" was #20 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The album's title track was nominated for a Best Traditional Blues Performance Grammy while "Rude Mood" grabbed a Grammy nom for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The 1983 album has sold more than 2 million copies.

The 30th Anniversary Legacy Edition of Texas Flood includes extensive liner notes by noted music historian Ashley Kahn (A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album; Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece).

In his notes, Kahn writes, "The story of Texas Flood—more than any other recording by the guitarist—is the story of Stevie Ray. The album stands closest to his personal roots, roots that grew from a loamy mix of deep Southern blues, Texas R&B, and white-boy  rock 'n' roll. It echoes his earliest triumphs as a guitarist, and serves as the triumphant finish-line to a ten-year run of hustling and scuffling that began in 1973, when the Dallas-born, 18-year old left home for the Austin music scene."
